Will Varicose Vein Treatment Affect My Blood Pressure?

Question: I have hypertension and am currently taking medication for it. Does the vein treatment for varicose veins affect overall heart health?

Answer: No, it does not.

The target of varicose vein treatment is the superficial vein system (the veins closer to the surface of the skin). When superficial veins are functioning normally, they contribute approximatlely 1% of the overall blood return to the heart. The vast majority of blood return is handled by the deep vein system.

When the valves in the superficial veins are damaged and become insufficient (leaky) , they contribute even less than that 1%. Essentially, the blood in these damaged superficial veins becomes stagnant rather than circulating properly. Over time, the increased pressure from this pooled blood can cause skin irritation and brownish-blue discoloration. This condition is known as venous stasis with hyperpigmentation.

After closing down the diseased superficial veins, you will not see a change in your systemic blood pressure—including your diastolic pressure (the bottom number)—when it is measured at the doctor's office. What you will notice is significant symptomatic relief and a reduction in leg swelling.
