Getting Pregnant After Vein Treatment: What You Need to Know
Can you get pregnant right after vein treatment?
If you're in your late 20s or 30s and are considering or currently undergoing vein treatment, you may be wondering if you should wait to get pregnant. It's a smart idea to finish your vein treatments before pregnancy, as this can prevent your symptoms from worsening. The good news is that there is no required waiting period after your treatment is complete. You can try to conceive whenever you're ready.
Will getting pregnant after vein treatment harm the treated veins?
No, but it's important to take preventive measures. Wearing medical-grade compression stockings during pregnancy can significantly reduce the chance of new varicose veins appearing. However, you may still develop new spider veins.
After you give birth, a follow-up ultrasound can check the status of your veins. In most cases, there's no significant "recanalization," which is when a treated vein reopens. If you do develop new or recanalized varicose veins, they can be treated with foam sclerotherapy soon after delivery, even while you are breastfeeding.
Can I get vein procedures while breastfeeding?
Yes, you can.
The minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided vein procedures are performed in our office with local anesthesia. This makes it safe to resume breastfeeding on the same day as your procedure.
However, if you're having foam sclerotherapy, it's recommended that you pump and discard your breast milk for four hours after the procedure before you safely resume breastfeeding.
