Fifteen years ago, when I was in general surgery training, venous medicine (also known as Phlebology) was a small part of vascular surgery training. Procedures like phlebotomies and GSV stripping (invasive surgical removal of refluxing veins) were the standard. I performed dozens of these as a general surgery resident, fascinated by both the medical and cosmetic benefits they offered.
The Shift Towards Efficiency and Precision
However, the field began to evolve, moving away from extensive surgery towards minimally invasive procedures. Interventional radiologists, with their expertise in image-guided techniques, started to embrace these advancements.
I recognized this shift early. After four years of general surgery training, I transitioned into radiology, ultimately specializing in interventional radiology. My goal was to master minimally invasive vein procedures. I saw firsthand how successful clinics were moving towards same-day procedures that didn't require full anesthesia. Now, I perform all vein procedures with just a few local numbing shots (lidocaine injections), and each procedure typically takes only about 10 minutes. Patients can eat normally beforehand and resume light activities immediately.
My surgical background is invaluable; I always double-check my setup, have a backup plan, and constantly review my techniques for improvement.
The Breadth of Training Makes a Difference
Beyond my 4 years of general surgery, 4 years of diagnostic radiology, and an additional year of interventional radiology training, I dedicated another 1-2 years to specialized study in vascular ultrasound (earning RPVI certification) and venous medicine (achieving ABVLM certification).
